New to the UK and need a car? Here is what to check, step by step.

Licence: many overseas licences can be used for up to 12 months after you become resident. After that you may need a UK licence. Check your country on gov.uk before you drive.

Insurance: every car must be insured before you drive it. Get quotes before you buy, because insurance for new drivers and new arrivals can cost more than the car.

Tax and MOT: the car must be taxed (online at gov.uk) and, if over three years old, have a valid MOT. You can check any car's MOT history free on gov.uk with the number plate.

The logbook (V5C): make sure the seller's name and address match the logbook. Never buy a car without one.

Paying: see the car in daylight and never send a deposit for a car you haven't seen.
